Multi-Periodic Oscillations in Cepheids and RR Lyrae-Type Stars
Classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae-type stars are usually considered to be textbook examples of purely radial, strictly periodic pulsators. Not all the variables, however, conform to this simple picture. In this review I discuss different forms of multi-periodicity observed in Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, including Blazhko effect and various types of radial and nonradial multi-mode oscillations.
متن کاملStrange Cepheids and Rr Lyrae
Strange modes can occur in radiative classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae models. These are vibrational modes that are trapped near the surface as a result of a ’potential barrier’ caused by the sharp hydrogen partial ionization region. Typically the modal number of the strange mode falls between the 7th and 12th overtone, depending on the astrophysical parameters of the equilibrium stellar models (...
متن کاملOn the Theoretical Period-Radius Relation of Classical Cepheids
We present the results of a comprehensive theoretical investigation on the Period-Radius (PR) relation of classical Cepheids based on new sequences of full amplitude, nonlinear convective models constructed by adopting a wide range of both stellar masses and chemical compositions. In the period range 0.9 ≤ logP ≤ 1.8 a very good agreement is found between theoretical predictions and current ava...
متن کاملPreliminary results for RR Lyrae stars and Classical Cepheids from the Vista Magellanic Cloud (VMC) Survey
The Vista Magellanic Cloud (VMC, PI M.R. Cioni) survey is collectingKS-band time series photometry of the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds (MC) and the “bridge” that connects them. These data are used to build KS-band light curves of the MC RR Lyrae stars and Classical Cepheids and determine absolute distances and the 3D geometry of the whole system using the K-band period luminosity ...
متن کاملComparison of Distances from Rr Lyrae Stars, the Tip of the Red-giant Branch and Classical Cepheids
The extragalactic distance scale relies heavily on Cepheids. However, it has become clear from observations and pulsation models that the slope and zero point of their P-L relations differ from galaxy to galaxy. This makes the determination of Cepheid distances complex and calls for an independent test of their differences. The test is provided by RRLyrae star distances of 24 galaxies which cal...
